FRIDAY'S GAMES

Iowa Class 4A playoffs

Pleasant Valley (7-2) at Bettendorf (8-1)

Basics: 7 p.m., TouVelle Stadium

Last meeting: Bettendorf 27, PV 17 (Sept. 15)

Storylines: PV won and scored 49 points each of the past two weeks to get into the playoffs. Bettendorf has reeled off eight straight victories. The Bulldogs are 7-1 versus the Spartans all-time in the postseason. PV led regular-season matchup 17-14 after three quarters.

Davenport Central (6-3) at North Scott (8-1)

Basics: 7 p.m., Lancer Stadium

Last meeting: North Scott 27, Central 7 (Sept. 7)

Storylines: Game features two of the better tailbacks in area — Central's Jatoviay Hill (1,438 yards, 22 TDs) and North Scott's Jared Rus (1,161, 12 TDs). Rus had 236 yards in the first meeting. Central has not won a playoff game since 1986. North Scott is 5-2 in the first round since 2010.

Iowa Class 3A playoffs

Washington (8-1) at Davenport Assumption (7-2)

Basics: 7 p.m., Brady Street Stadium

Last meeting: Assumption 33, Washington 24 (2015)

Storylines: Washington is the top-scoring offense in 3A at 46.7 points per game. Its lone loss was to No. 1 Solon in September, 40-0. Making its 11th straight playoff trip, Assumption has outscored its last four foes 172-28. Ryan Wohlers and Jayce Levy have teamed for 1,764 rushing yards and 31 TDs.

Iowa Class 2A playoffs

West Liberty (6-3) at Cascade (9-0)

Basics: 7 p.m., Cascade High School

Storylines: West Liberty returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. The Comets are led by Seth Feldman, who has 1,750 total yards and 22 touchdowns as a dual-threat quarterback. Spencer Daufeldt has 20 tackles for loss. Cascade is holding opponents to 9.8 points per game.

Iowa Class 1A playoffs

Wilton (8-1) at Bellevue (8-1)

Basics: 7 p.m., Bellevue High School

Last meeting: Wilton 27, Bellevue 0 (2015)

Storylines: Bellevue is looking for a second straight quarterfinal trip. The Comets showcase a balanced offense, with QB Cade Daugherty throwing for more than 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns. Running back Hunter Clasen has 1,300-plus yards and 23 TDs. Wilton QB Jerome Mays has totaled more than 2,200 yards and 31 TDs.

Iowa 8-player playoffs

Janesville (6-3) at Midland (7-2)

Basics: 7 p.m., Midland High School

Last meeting: No recent meeting

Storylines: Midland made its first trip to the UNI-Dome last year. A year after leading 8-player in passing yards, the Eagles are third in the state in rushing yards. Midland's Austin Smith has rushed for 2,270 yards, thrown for 519, has 237 receiving and scored 49 touchdowns on the season.

Illinois Class 4A playoffs

Alleman (5-4) at Chicago Raby (8-1)

Basics: 7 p.m., Hanson Stadium

Storylines: Alleman must contain an athletic QB in 6-2, 196-pound Tyshun Turnipseed. Raby runs a spread offense. Alleman coach Todd Depoorter expects Raby to play man-to-man coverage with a lot of blitzing. The field is old-style Astroturf, so the Pioneers will have both shoes and cleats.

Geneseo (5-4) at Dixon (8-1)

Basics: 7 p.m., Dixon High School

Last meeting: Geneseo 56, Dixon 0 (2013)

Storylines: An old rivalry is renewed between Geneseo and Dixon. Geneseo needed a last-minute touchdown to beat Morris and qualify for the playoffs for the 41st year, the most in Illinois. Dixon is averaging 53.4 points per game, but the Maple Leafs have won the last 12 meetings.

SATURDAY'S GAMES

Illinois Class 7A playoffs

Mt. Carmel (6-3) at Moline (7-2)

Basics: 4 p.m., Browning Field

Storylines: Mt. Carmel has won 12 state titles, all but one of them under current coach Frank Lenti. Mount Carmel is 109-20 in the playoffs while Moline is 3-18. Moline coach Mike Morrissey believes ball control could be a key for the Maroons as well as taking care of opportunities via turnovers. 

Illinois Class 4A playoffs

Kewanee (6-3) at Morris (7-2)

Basics: 2 p.m., Morris High School

Last meeting: No recent meeting

Storylines: Kewanee has played like a different team the last five weeks, going 5-0 and scoring 13 more points per game and allowing 21 fewer points. Kewanee is the smallest school in 4A. Morris is coming off a last-minute loss to Geneseo and is holding teams to 12.7 points per game.

Illinois Class 2A playoffs

Rockford Christian (5-4) at Orion (7-2)

Basics: 1 p.m., Charger Field

Last meeting: No recent meeting

Storylines: The Chargers boast one of the best defenses in Class 2A, allowing 11.2 points per game and posting three shutouts. The Chargers feature a balanced running attack of Sam and Seth West and can also throw the ball with Iowa commit Logan Lee at tight end. Rockford Christian is making its first playoff appearance since 2010.

El Paso-Gridley (5-4) at Rockridge (8-1)

Basics: 2 p.m., Saturday, Rockridge High School

Storylines: Rockridge is in the playoffs for the eighth straight year thanks to an explosive offense led by QB Riley Fetterer. Nathan Parchert has been a key part of the offense on the ground but is questionable after an injury suffered last week. El Paso-Gridley is winless in the postseason.

West Carroll (6-3) at Fieldcrest (7-2)

Basics: 2 p.m., Fieldcrest High School

Last meeting: No recent meeting

Storylines: West Carroll is looking for its first playoff win since 2007. The Thunder's three losses have all come to playoff teams, including Class 1A No. 1 Lena-Winslow. Fieldcrest is averaging more than 33 points per game while the Thunder are holding teams to 11.9 points per game.

Mercer County (5-4) at Clifton Central (7-2)

Basics: 2 p.m., Clifton Central High School

Last meeting: Mercer County 26, Clifton Central 7 (2012)

Storylines: The last time these two teams met was in the Class 2A state semifinals, with the Golden Eagles going on to win the state title. Mercer County is 44-37 all-time in the playoffs while Clifton Central is 40-41. 

Illinois Class 1A playoffs

Fulton (6-3) at Ottawa Marquette (7-2)

Basics: 1 p.m., Ottawa

Last meeting: Marquette 33, Fulton 18 (2011)

Storylines: These former Big Rivers conference foes meet again after six years apart. Marquette running back Zach Dyche is third in school history with 2,368 career rushing yards. Fulton's Austin Schroeder has rushed for 1,282 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

Orangeville (5-4) at Annawan-Wethersfield (8-1)

Basics: 2 p.m., Wethersfield High School

Last meeting: No meeting

Storylines: Annawan-Wethersfield is coming off consecutive 2A semifinal trips but makes the switch to 1A. The Titans have overcome some injuries to win their second straight Lincoln Trail Conference title. Orangeville was fifth in the Northwest Upstate Illini Upstate and allows 15.9 points a game.
