POLK CITY, Iowa — Clinton’s Jake Luett is four strokes off the lead after the opening round of the Iowa Class 4A state boys golf tournament.
Luett turned in a 5-over par 76 Friday at the Tournament Club of Iowa, an Arnold Palmer design. The 76 was the lowest score among the nine golfers from the Mississippi Athletic Conference competing in the tournament.
Des Moines Roosevelt’s Willis Gaer fired a 72 and has a two-stroke advantage over Waukee’s Griffin Parker, Indianola’s Jake Marvelli and Dubuque Senior’s Louis Psihoyos in the two-day event.
Dowling Catholic leads the team race at 310, followed by Waukee (313), West Des Moines Valley (314) and Linn-Mar (315). Davenport Assumption, making its second consecutive state tournament appearance, didn’t have anybody shoot better than 84 and is in last place at 343.
Matt Cain had an 84 while Griffin Steer and Tom Schebler each posted 86 and Max Gogel registered 87 for the Knights.
Pleasant Valley’s Michael Showers carded an 83 and Bettendorf’s Benny Flanagan had 86.
The final round is slated to tee off at 9 a.m. Saturday.
