POLK CITY, Iowa — Davenport Assumption junior Griffin Steer followed up his first-round 86 with a 75 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 24th at the Iowa Class 4A state boys golf tournament along with Clinton senior Jake Luett at 19-over 161.
The Knights improved by 11 stokes as a team on the second and final round of the tournament, shooting a 332 to finish 11th place overall with a 675 overall total. Junior Matt Cain shot an 81 to finish in a tie for 34th at 165, while senior Max Gogel posted an 84 to finish in a tie for 48th at 171.
Bettendorf's Benny Flanagan shot a second-round 83 and Pleasant Valley's Michael Showers shot 86 as both golfers finished tied for 41st at 169.
Luett, who was four strokes off the lead after a first-round 76, fell back with an 85 on Saturday for Clinton.
Willis Gaer of Des Moines Roosevelt shot 73 on Saturday to win the state championship with a 3-over 145, while West Des Moines Valley took home the team title with a 626 two-day total, edging second-place Waukee by three strokes. Linn-Mar finished third with a 636.
Also for Assumption, senior Tom Schebler shot a 92 to finish 65th at 178, junior John Lystiuk shot 97 to finish 77th at 189 and senior Luke Castro closed with a 92 to finish 80th at 191 overall.
Illinois girls sectional: Senior Katy Schmitt of Sherrard shot a 77 on Saturday at the Illinois Class 1A Rock Falls girls golf sectional to lead four area state qualifiers.
Also qualifying for state were Kewanee freshman Riley Hansen (82), Rockridge senior Jillian Stone (83) and Erie senior Sera Bebon (84). The 1A state meet is Friday and Saturday at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.
