The Illinois High School Association’s boys basketball tournament will celebrate its 100th anniversary in March 2007. While one or two states might claim to have an older tournament, no tournament in the nation that is sponsored by a state high school association is older than the IHSA’s.
As part of the tourney’s centennial celebration, the IHSA will announce “100 legends of the state tournament.’’
Fans will be able to have a voice in the process, as voting for the legends will be held between Dec. 8, 2005, and March 20, 2006. Fans can vote online through the IHSA Web site or by casting a ballot at one of the participating sponsors.
The criteria for qualifying as a legend of the state tourney is: Any individual (player, coach, media member, official or administrator, who, through his or her performance or service, has made a significant contribution to or left a lasting impression on the IHSA boys basketball state tournament, thereby aiding in the tournament’s growth over its 100-year existence.
The official tip-off for the program is Dec. 6, during a press conference at the IHSA office.
Playoff tickets available

Rock Island Alleman, which plays Saturday night at Augustana College’s Ericson Field, has tickets on sale from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the main office. Geneseo, which hosts a game Saturday afternoon, has tickets available today from noon to 4 p.m. There is no pre-sale for games involving Moline’s home game Friday night and Rock Island’s road game Saturday at Bloomington.
All tickets are general admission for $4 and will be available at the gates on the day of the games.
Solon awarded forfeit
Solon was awarded a 1-0 forfeit win over MFL MarMac from a game that was called off Sept. 30 because of an outbreak of whooping cough at MFL.
MFL officially forfeited the game earlier this week, giving Solon 13 playoff points in the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s point system.
Heading into this week’s final regular season games, Solon (8-0, 6-0 in Class 2A District 4) has clinched a playoff spot. The point differential could come into play, however, pending the outcome of Friday’s game against Dyersville Beckman.
