Illinois girls track

Class 2A: Geneseo's Erika Furbeck qualified for Saturday's finals in three events at the Illinois girls state meet in Charleston on Friday.

Furbeck tied for the best leap of the day in the long jump (19 feet, 3 inches) to reach the finals where she will attempt to improve upon her second-place finish a year ago.

Furbeck also moved on in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash Friday. The junior won her heat in the 100 with a 12.12 second time, and was third in her heat in the 200 with a 25.35.

Geneseo's Josie Brown was third in her heat in the 800 with a 2:21.89 and did not advance to the finals.

Erie's Courtney Kruthoff and Kewanee's Iesha Crowe qualified for finals in the high jump by clearing 5-1.

Class 3A: Demetria Johnson and Cedreahna Kennedy will race together one last time in the 100 hurdles state final Saturday in Charleston.

The Rock Island duo qualified after posting impressive Class 3A preliminary times on Friday. Johnson won her heat in 14.6 seconds, which was the fourth-best time and Kennedy ran 15.13 seconds.

The Rocks weren't done there as senior thrower Kylie Wymer and the 400 relay also qualified for finals. Wymer heaved a throw of 40 feet, 2.75 inches and the 400 relay quartet ran 48.59 seconds.

Moline's Megan Pittington will run for a state championship in the 400-meter dash after posting a time of 58.47 seconds that was second in her heat. Pittington did not qualify in both the 100 and 200.

Rock Island's 800 relay, 1,600 relay, Mykedra Craig (100), Alex Axup and Kennedy (pole vault) and United Township's Azlynn Sherrod-Butler (100 hurdles) competed but did not qualify for their respective finals.

Illinois boys track

Class 2A: Alleman's Nathan Graves will head to the Illinois state meet in three events.

Graves posted qualifying standards in the high jump (6-03), triple jump (43-10.50) and the discus (162-00) in the 2A Rochelle sectional Thursday. Sprinter Seth Sottos hit standards in both the 100 (11.06) and 200 (22.55). Spencer Smith (3,200 run) and Corneille Logo (triple jump) will also head to Charleston.

Geneseo, coming off a second-place finish last season, sends another talented bunch to Eastern Illinois.

The Maple Leafs will send six individuals and two relays to the state meet after putting up 71 points in the team scores. Erie will send their 3,200 and 1,600 relays as well Kody Wetzell in the 400 and Kyle Kruhtoff in the pole vault.

Iowa boys golf

Sabers to state: The Central DeWitt boys golf team is returning to the Class 3A state meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Led by Rielly McGranahan’s 73 and a 77 from McGwire Eden, the Sabers compiled a team score of 321, the sixth lowest of the nine team qualifiers.

Brad Gannon (82), Tanner Steffens (89), Tucker Kinney (90) and Jacob Brainerd (90) rounded out the effort for DeWitt.

Girls soccer

Peoria ND 6, Alleman 1: Peoria Notre Dame scored four goals in the second half to pull away from the Pioneers at the 2A regional final in Peoria.

Dora Cacari scored Alleman’s only goal in the 72nd minute.


Galva 9, West Central 2: Katie Larson smacked two home runs and Peyton Weston threw a 4-hitter Friday as Galva defeated West Central 9-2 to win a 1A regional championship.
