Roemer fires 75, finishes 27th: Despite rain and strong wind gusts, Pleasant Valley freshman Jack Roemer improved his score by five strokes from the opening round of the Iowa Class 4A state meet Saturday to finish in a tie for 27th place.
Roemer posted a 5-over 75 at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown on Saturday. Roemer had a birdie the par-3 16th, four bogeys and a double in his round.
Bettendorf senior Steven Gottwald shot 79 for the second straight day and finished tied for 40th at 158.
Marshalltown's Nate Vance won a four-man playoff for individual medalist honors at 142. The Bobcats also took the team title with a 582 two-day total, 16 strokes better than runner-up Johnston.
Dubuque Hempstead 47, Davenport West 21: It took two days to complete, but Hempstead broke into the victory column in district play Saturday with a home triumph over West.
Hempstead (3-4, 1-2) had a 27-7 lead at halftime Friday night but the second half was postponed because of lightning. The teams returned to Dalzell Field on Saturday morning and finished the contest.
The Mustangs scored three touchdowns to build a 47-7 cushion before the Falcons (1-6, 0-3) tallied two scores in the final 4 minutes.
Chase Sabers had three rushing scores in the game, including a 90-yarder in the second quarter.
