Athletes of the week
Powered by five birdies, Bussert fired an even-par 72 Saturday to finish in a tie for second place at the Illinois Class 1A state tournament in Bloomington. Bussert finished with a two-round total of 148.
School: North Cedar
The outside hitter recorded 50 kills and 30 digs for North Cedar in five matches en route to the Knights' River Valley Conference tournament title. Hawtrey had 17 kills and 10 digs in a three-set semifinal win against Tipton.
School: Central DeWitt
Ran 29 times for 262 yards and four touchdowns, including a 71-yard run to lead the Sabers to a 42-22 win over Center Point-Urbana. Smith has rushed for 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
Teams of the week
Last week: The Class 4A sixth-ranked Bulldogs went on the road and dismantled then-No. 4 Iowa City High, 44-7, to clinch the district title and a first-round home playoff game. Bettendorf racked up 523 yards of offense and limited City High to season lows in points and yardage.
Muscatine girls cross country
Last week: For the first time in program history, Muscatine captured the Mississippi Athletic Conference title. Led by Brina Kraft and Moriah Morter in the top six, the Muskies staved off Bettendorf by one point and Pleasant Valley by two to win the title at Burlington's Flint Hills Golf Course.
Last weeK: Went 5-0 to win the Sherrard Invitational, which included a three-set win over previously undefeated Monmouth United. The Flying Geese beat United again Monday, 25-22, 26-24 to clinch at least a share of the Lincoln Trail Conference and improve to 31-1.
