How they got here: PV beat Davenport Central and Muscatine in regional action before knocking off second-ranked West Des Moines Valley 4-2 in nine innings on Tuesday. Urbandale upended Ankeny (5-2) and Linn-Mar (3-2) in regionals before tripping up No. 3 Cedar Rapids Jefferson in quarters, 5-3.

Quick hits: PV is attempting to reach state final for second straight year. The Spartans are second in the state with 53 home runs, two hit in the quarterfinal win over Valley. The Spartans have won 11 of their last 12. Urbandale, at state for a third consecutive season, hasn't been to a state final since 1996. Shellmyer is among top three in 5A in average and runs scored. This is first meeting of season between teams.

Class 3A

Who: No. 1 Assumption (42-1) vs. No. 7 Center Point-Urbana (30-10)

When: Thursday, 3:30 p.m.

At stake: Winner advances to state championship game at 7:09 p.m. Friday against No. 8 Mount Vernon (29-15) or No. 9 Albia (29-8). 

How they got here: Assumption hasn't allowed a run in four postseason wins over Williamsburg, Northeast, West Liberty and West Marshall. CPU beat Oelwein (22-0), New Hampton (10-5) and Crestwood (6-5) in regionals and knocked off Humboldt (14-2) in state quarterfinals.

Quick hits: This is the third time these schools have met at a girls state tournament this school year. CPU beat Assumption in basketball quarterfinals while Knights won the 1A state final over the Stormin Pointers in soccer. CPU is hitting .400 as a team, tops in 3A. It has six girls batting .390 or better. Conversely, CPU's team ERA is 3.31 compared to Assumption's 0.47. Assumption is eyeing second straight finals trip. 

Class 2A

Who: No. 2 Durant (32-7) vs. No. 8 Iowa City Regina (28-11)

When: Thursday, 3 p.m.

At stake: Winner advances to state championship game at 4:55 p.m. Friday against No. 3 Interstate 35 (27-4) or No. 9 Eddyville EBF (31-8). 

How they got here: Durant has cruised through the postseason with one-sided wins over North Cedar, Bellevue, North Linn and Logan-Magnolia by a 39-1 margin. Regina has victories over West Branch (6-0), Wilton (5-4), Beckman (5-0) and North Union (8-1).

Durant impact players: Cathy Ralfs, sr., C (.444 avg., 7 HR, 51 RBIs); Kamryn Meyer, so., P (20-2, 0.92 ERA, 144 1/3 IP, 192 Ks); Hannah Happ, so., SS (.379 avg., 41 runs, 30 SB)

Quick hits: Durant is looking for its first trip to state finals since its title team of 2013. Regina is seeking a third straight appearance in the 2A championship. The top two teams in River Valley Conference South Division met on June 26. Durant swept the doubleheader, 2-1 and 8-1. Meyer has won 10 straight decisions and has yielded only seven earned runs since June 17. Regina edged Durant 2-1 in 10 innings in 2015 state quarterfinal.
