Defending champion: Waukee

Need to know: Based on district performances, the Central Iowa Metropolitan League is favored to have the top four finishers in Waukee, Ames, Johnston and Ankeny. Waukee won the program's first state title last year and has qualified fourth or better in seven of the 11 events. Bettendorf, third a season ago, is projected to finish in the top five as coach Mike Ahrens' team has at least one competitor in every event. Michigan football signee Oliver Martin of Iowa City West, already with seven gold medals, has state's top time in 50 freestyle this year.

Local flavor: The Bulldogs' Caleb Aman is top seed in 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke along with swimming on two relays anticipated to place in top five. Bettendorf's Zach Bunn comes in seeded fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 free while Charlie Bunn is ninth in the 200 free. ... PV's Sam Lundry is seeded seventh in both distance freestyle events. Teammate Kevin Burke is in the running to earn a podium finish (top six) in the 100 backstroke. ... Muscatine qualified in five events. Freshman Daylon Shelangoski is ranked among top 12 in 200 IM and 100 butterfly.
