Moline’s Shaddy Khalafallah won his first two matches at the Illinois Class 2A state tournament Thursday, advancing to Friday's third round in Arlington Heights.
Khalaffallah (27-5) plays at 8 a.m. Friday against Nick Marino of Glenbrook North a top-four seed, for a berth in the quarterfinals.
Khalafallah beat Cecil Mella of Gurnee Warren 6-0, 6-0, then defeated Ryan Mitchell of Lincoln-Way East 7-6 (3) and 6-1.
"Mitchell was a 9-16 seed," said Moline coach Jeff McCracken. "He was really consistent. In the second set, (Shaddy) got it all together."
Teammate Shiv Puri lost both of his matches and was eliminated.
In Class 1A, Alleman’s Joey Miller and its doubles team both went 1-2 for the day and were eliminated, as did Geneseo’s No. 2 doubles team.
In other doubles action in Class 1A, Geneseo’s Avery Dunker and Mick Haverland won their first match, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4, lost their second match but won in the second round of the consolation to advance to Friday's action.
Geneseo’s No. 2 doubles team of Will Chaney and A.J. Miller lost its first match but won in the first round of consolation, 6-1, 6-3 over Marcos Lightfoot and Tyler Sherrill of Carbondale High School. In the second round of consolation, however, they lost 6-3, 6-2 to Adrienne Velasco and Joe Demirjian of Mt. Zion.
Alleman’s doubles team of Ben Woeber and Jesse Dyer lost its opener but also won the first round in consolation, 6-2, 6-0 over a team from New Lenox Providence. However, they lost to Belvidere North’s John Steward and Nick Jacobson, 6-3, 6-4.
The Pioneers’ Miller won his first-round match, but lost his second- and third-round matches, bowing out with a loss to Jason Eberly of Lansing Illiana Christian 7-6 (7), 6-1.
