PV perfect at North Scott invite: The Pleasant Valley girls tennis team has lost only two matches in nine dual meets so far this spring. 

PV continued its dominance Saturday at the North Scott Lancer Invitational. 

Coach Eric Crawford's team was 27-0 to compile a perfect score at the eight-team meet. Johnston was second with 14.5 points and Camanche took third with 6.5.

PV's Lily Feldman, Hannah Humes, Emily Nutt, Roshni Penmatcha, Kayla Nutt and Abi Paravasthuramesh won singles crowns for the Spartans. 

Feldman beat Johnston's Cari Naanep 8-5 in the No. 1 singles flight final. Penmatch didn't drop a game in claiming the No. 4 flight.

In doubles, Feldman and Kayla Nutt teamed for a title at No. 1. Penmatcha and Emily Nutt won No. 2 while Humes and Paravasthuramesh took No. 3. 

PV has five starters back from last year's Class 2A state runner-up team. 

Camanche's Natalie Goble was second-place to Humes at No. 2 singles. Muscatine had a pair of doubles teams finish second in Elizabeth Cahill and Emma Maynard at No. 2 and Melissa Burzlaff and Sarah Spellman at No. 3. 

Boys tennis

PV boys also perfect: The Pleasant Valley boys tennis team matched the girls Saturday at its own invite, going 27-0 to cruise to the team title.

Sriram Sugumaran did not drop a set and defeated Teddy Weaver of North Scott 8-0 in the championship at No. 1 singles. Joining him as singles champions were Justin Sehlin, Vincent Gnad, Aditya Subamaniam, Kiran Marla and Cameron Trentz.

Sugumaran and Subramaniam teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles crown, while Gnad/Sehlin and Marla/Trentz also earned doubles crowns.

Geneseo was second at the meet with 14 points while Davenport North was third with 10.

Boys soccer

Assumption wins Catholic tournament: The Class 1A fifth-ranked Davenport Assumption soccer team earned a Catholic tournament title Saturday at the Tuma Soccer Complex in Cedar Rapids.

The Knights beat No. 15 Council Bluffs St. Albert and No. 2 Iowa City Regina by 1-0 counts in pool play. In the championship, the Knights upended top-ranked Dyersville Beckman 1-0. The win snapped Beckman's 47 match win streak. 

Assumption (7-3) has won six straight matches. 

Girls soccer

North Scott 4, C.R. Xavier 2: Rylie and Karli Rucker each scored a pair of goals to lead the Class 2A No. 1 Lancers (5-1) to a win over 11th-ranked Xavier in Cedar Rapids Saturday.


UT sweeps Galesburg: Brandi LaFountaine homered, drove in four runs and earned the Game 1 pitching win in a 15-0, 12-0 Western Big Six doubleheader sweep of Galesburg.

LaFountaine and Taylor Workheiser limited the Silver Streaks to two hits in each game. London Jackson homered and drove in four runs in Game 2 for the Panthers (10-4, 6-0).


Galesburg 6-10, UT 0-0: Rennie Schott struck out 13 in a four-hit shutout in the opener, and the Silver Streaks went on to sweep the Panthers in Galesburg to improve to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in Western Big Six play.

United Township dropped to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in conference.
