Bettendorf cracked the top 10 at the Class 4A state boys track and field meet last season behind two individuals.

Suni Lane and Cole Webster are back and expected to be state contenders again in their respective events next month, but the Bulldogs have some firepower to go with them this season.

Coach Dave Terronez's squad won seven events, four of those relays, Thursday night at the 21st annual Ira Dunsworth Invitational to claim the team title with 135 points at Brady Street Stadium.

Dubuque Senior was second in the 12-team field with 107 points, followed by Clinton (96), Central DeWitt (79) and Davenport West (77).

"This is a very capable team," Bettendorf sophomore 400 runner Darien Porter said. "We've got a lot of young and old speedsters. If we keep developing over the season, I think we can compete for a state title."

Porter and Josh Anderson ran on three of those victorious relays — sprint medley (1 minute, 38.78 seconds), 1,600 medley (3:46.34) and the 1,600 (3:28.77).

Bettendorf also won the 400 relay while Webster swept the throws and Lane prevailed in the high jump.

It was the Bulldogs' third Dunsworth title, first since 2012.

"We feel we've got some relays that can make it to (Drake Relays) and do some damage," Terronez said. "We loaded up as much as we could tonight to get some times for Jesse Day and Gateway (Classic)."

The Bulldogs have a nice blend of age groups. Terronez pointed out he has seven or eight contributors in each of the top three grade levels along with a couple freshmen.

"It is contagious in our team," Terronez noted. "We got Suni out last year. Now he's attracted JMike (Young) and Cole Grothusen to come out. When you've got athletes like that, you put together the workouts and they take care of themselves."

In just his second outdoor meet of the season, Porter ran a 50-second split on the anchor leg of the 1,600 relay.

It was particularly rewarding to win three relays with three other teammates.

"The relays are a blast," Porter said, "because you can go out with your team and get everyone hyped up ready to run as opposed to getting inside your own head and making yourself excited for the race."

Webster threw 166-5 in the discus, his best recorded performance of the season. He took the shot put with a heave of 51-4 1/2.

The Northern Illinois football prospect appeared to have a throw exceed 170 in the finals of the discus but he couldn't keep his feet inside the ring.

"The (166-5) is a good mark for this early in the season," Webster said. "Obviously, it would have been nice to have that 170-plus in the final, but it is still a process of getting there.

"Before state, I want to at least get to 180 in the discus."

Central DeWitt's Terry Harris broke the school record in the 100. The senior posted a time of 10.97, breaking Kyle Meade's mark of 11.07 in 2005.

Harris also won the 200 in 22.58 and led off the runner-up 400 relay.

"My passion always has been to get up there and break the school record," Harris said. "I finally have my name up on the board, and it is something I can be proud of. That's a big accomplishment for me."

Davenport Central's Kevin Kurth secured the long jump with a season-best leap of 22-4 1/2. It vaults Kurth to the top distance in the state this spring.

Even so, Kurth was not overjoyed afterward.

"I put in quite a bit of work in the offseason," he said. "It is not showing itself yet, but I'm sure it will.

"It is all in my approach right now. My last step closest to the board, I need to shorten that up quite a bit. If I can do that and get some nice weather, hopefully I can surpass 23 (Feet)."

Davenport West's Tyler Williams won the 100 hurdles and also ran on the Falcons' first-place shuttle hurdle relay squad.

Davenport North breezed to a victory in the 800 relay. Central garnered first place in the 3,200 relay and Muscatine junior Tyler Olson ran 4:40.32 to win the 1,600.
