When Erin McQuillen heard the long jump official say she soared 17 feet, 6 inches Thursday afternoon, the Bettendorf sophomore did a double take.

“Are you sure?" McQuillen said. "I was just super surprised."

It was a personal-best by 11 inches, virtually solidifying a spot into the Drake Relays later this month and helping propel Bettendorf’s girls track and field team to a one-point victory, 146-145, over Pleasant Valley at the Jesse Day Invitational.

After the public address announcer gave the final team scores, Bettendorf sprinted toward midfield on the Brady Street Stadium turf. It jumped up and down in excitement.

“We’re on top of it this year,” McQuillen said. “We’re strong in almost every event. It is just fun looking forward to the meets with the success we’re having.”

McQuillen eclipsed her previous personal best on five of her six jumps. Her victory was one of four for the Bulldogs. Trinity Borland prevailed in the 3,000, Alli Wroblewski took the 400 and the Bulldogs won the 800 relay.

“My goals were to get into the 17s this year,” McQuillen said. “This puts me a step ahead. I can start looking forward to the 18s.”

Assumption’s Joy Ripslinger was part of two meet records.

She ran the third leg on the Knights’ winning 3,200 relay. The quartet of Lea Nelson, Julia Schumacher, Ripslinger and Billi Marzen clocked in at 9:32.17, the best time in the state this season and bettering the previous Jesse Day mark by Dubuque Wahlert in 1987.

Later, Ripslinger won the 1,500 in 4:38.49, a new meet mark by 8 seconds. Ripslinger bolted into the lead immediately and finished more than 23 seconds ahead of second place.

“It is a very different race with people around you,” Ripslinger said. “I look forward to the next time I get to race side-by-side with some other girls.

“You’ve got to deal with the competition that you have. It is not a big problem for me. It does take a little bit extra mental toughness.”

PV broke a 31-year-old meet record in the sprint medley relay. The Spartans’ quartet of Adrea Arthofer, Kira Arthofer, Amaria Kirby and Addie Swanson ran a season-best 1:48.99. It surpassed the 1:50.3 ran by Davenport West in 1986.

Kira Arthofer also anchored PV’s winning 400 relay in a season-best time of 49.36. Arthofer missed the entire basketball season recovering from a knee injury sustained last summer.

“Being on a team that already is so competitive, it really pushes you in practice and helps you when you get to these type of meets,” she said.

Arthofer admits it has been crazy going from not participating to running full throttle in the last four to five weeks.

“My trainer and physical therapist always tell me to go all out, never hesitate, never be timid,” Arthofer said. “That’s when most injuries do occur. So I’m just going all out in everything that I can, and it seems to be working right now.”

Assumption’s Jasmine Harris earned victories in the 100 and 200. PV’s Ellie Spelhaug captured a victory and season-best time in the 100 hurdles (15.16) along with leading off the victorious shuttle hurdle relay.

North Scott’s Kayla Slowick (discus) and Davenport Central’s Leah Grady (shot put) won the throws.
