As Joy Ripslinger crossed the finish line in the 800-meter run, she clutched her fists and had a huge grimace on her face.

Ripslinger was in some pain after logging a season-best and meet-record time of 2 minutes, 9.84 seconds Saturday afternoon in the Assumption Coed Invitational at Augustana College.

"I died a little bit at the end due to going out so fast," the Assumption senior said.

That quick start was by design.

The Arkansas signee went out in 60.54 seconds through the first 400 meters. She was on pace for the all-time Iowa best through 600 meters at 1:32, but the five-time state champion wasn't able to maintain that over the final 200.

"I've got my 400 time in a pretty good place right now," she said. "If I build that endurance a little more, hopefully I can get in that 2:05 range."

Sioux City East's Shelby Houlihan holds the Iowa all-time mark of 2:07.35. Ripslinger ran a state meet-record 2:07.51 at Drake Stadium last May.

The 2:09.94 was a meet record by nearly 10.5 seconds and the best time registered in Iowa this year by more than 3 seconds over Linn-Mar's Payton Wensel.

"This is the window where our training is pretty tough right now," Ripslinger said. "After Drake (Relays), we start to lower our volumes and get into race mode."

Cedar Falls won the 15-team girls competition with 120 points. Dubuque Hempstead took second place with 107 points, followed by Bettendorf and Sterling with 82 each and Assumption 81.

Hempstead edged Des Moines Hoover for the boys title, 126-109.

The Assumption girls manged to set three meet marks. In addition to Ripslinger, the Knights won the 800 relay in a season-best time of 1:43.34 and the 1,600 relay in 3:59.84. Both times vault the Knights to No. 1 in the state.

Jasmine Harris, Carly King, Lea Nelson and Mary Grace Carroll comprised the 800 relay, almost a 3-second drop from their indoor time last month.

"The goal is to always go lower," Carroll said. "We keep setting the bar higher and higher. If we can drop three seconds between two races, there is no reason we can't drop three more."

Even after King was pulled from the 1,600 relay after suffering an ankle injury in the 400 relay, the Knights still ran a season-best time with Harris, Ripslinger, Nelson and Olivia Lansing.

"We're pretty mid-distance heavy this year," Harris said. "I've never been a 400 runner, but the coaches know what they're doing and they know how to push our bodies to the limits to reach our highest potential."

Assumption coach Tim O'Neill said the trainer told him King's injury wasn't serious. King played three soccer games this past week and ran two races Saturday before going down on the second exchange in the 400 relay.

"We have a stable of half-milers and quarter-milers right now," O'Neill noted. "That 200, 400 and 800 range, we have as much depth, if not more, than we've ever had since I've been coaching.

"We've got a lot of talented kids that are virtually unknowns because they've been behind other girls on our team."

Julia Schumacher collected Assumption's other victory, holding off Bettendorf's Trinity Borland in the 1,500 in 4:56.84. Schumacher has battled shin splits recently but still posted a season-best mark.

"I felt great that race," she said. "The warm weather definitely helped."

Sterling's Erin Long was the meet's outstanding female performer. She won the 100, 200, long jump and ran a leg on the victorious 400 relay.

Muscatine prevailed in the 3,200 relay (10:04.04) and Rockridge's Katie Walker took the 400 hurdles (1:10.30).

Assumption's boys snared first in the 3,200 relay with Jared Grubbs, Chris Guise, Chase Brandt and Will Rolfstad in 8:38.32. Orion's Dawson Schulenberg was triumphant in the high jump at 6 feet.
