RI's Andrews wins opener: Rock Island senior Alex Andrews made a successful debut at the Illinois state wrestling tournament Thursday in Champaign.
Andrews knocked off Chris Middlebrooks of Conant, ranked No. 4 in the state by Illinois Matmen, in a first-round match at the State Farm Center.
Andrews, ranked ninth and seeded eighth at state, moves on to face top-seeded and top-ranked Diata Drayton of Chicago Marist in today's quarterfinals. The senior improved to 41-0 with his first-round victory by major decision.
Andrews was among 13 Quad-City area wrestlers to win their first matches at state Thursday. Fulton defending state champion Tyler Fleetwood won by major decision over Charlie Patterson, while his twin brother, Taylor, also won at 285.
Mercer County (Stone Engle at 126, Justin Carey at 182), Morrison (Joe Eads at 138 and Dylan Keller at 160) and Orion (James Schnerre at 145 and Logan Lee at 220) also advanced two wrestlers to the quarterfinals.
