The Quad-City Mallards signed defensemen Kyle Bigos and Ales Sova, the team announced Monday.
Bigos, 28, makes his return to the ice with the Mallards after last playing early last season for the Idaho Steelheads. He played in two games for Idaho last October after spending the 2015-16 season in the United Kingdom with the Edinburgh Capitals of the Elite Ice Hockey League. While there, he scored five goals and added 15 assists in 44 games.
“Kyle is a big, strong, stay-at-home defenseman who’s been training hard this summer and is ready to get started,” Mallards coach Phil Axtell said. “I plan on him playing a simple and steady game while logging a lot of minutes.”
Bigos was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Draft and has nine goals and 39 assists with 365 penalty minutes in 156 career games.
Sova, 25, joins the Mallards after playing his first seven seasons in Europe. He played with the Herning Blue Fox last season, scoring one goal and adding 11 assists in 36 games. In his career, Sova has played in 272 games and produced 11 goals and 32 assists.
“Ales has been on my radar since last spring and he’s excited to transition to North American hockey,” Axtell said. “His pro experience in Europe should allow for a quick adjustment. I expect him to be a reliable puck-moving guy.”
