WICHITA — A rough 39 seconds cost the Mallards dearly Friday as Quad-City lost its 12th straight game, 6-3 to Wichita.
With the score tied 1-1 late in the second period, the Thunder's Colin Martin buried a pass from Travis Ewanyk to put Wichita ahead. Less than a minute later, Chad Butcher made the Thunder lead two.
Despite a pair of third period goals by the Mallards, Wichita led by at least two the rest of the way.
The Thunder outshot the Mallards 32-30 on the night. Both stayed out of the penalty box as each team failed in its only power play opportunity.
Ralph Cuddemi got the scoring going for the Thunder late in the first period off an assist from Jeremy Beaudry.
Triston Grant evened the score for the Mallards a minute into the second period, scoring his third goal of the season off assists from Matt Pohlkamp and Greg Amlong.
After the Thunder's pair of second goals, Travis Brown increased the Wichita lead to three with a goal 2:10 into the third period, starting a run of scoring that saw each team tally two goals in the first nine minutes of the period.
Gergo Nagy cut the lead to 4-2 with his first goal of the season for the Mallards before the Thunder's Kevin Dufour answered less than half a minute later, chasing Mallards goalie Matt O'Connor.
O'Connor saved 20 of the 25 shots he faced before getting replaced by Eric Hartzell.
A goal from Pohlkamp again cut the lead two two, but the Mallards could draw no closer.
Lane Bauer scored an empty net goal with about a minute and a half left to complete the scoring.
The Mallards return to action at 7 p.m. today at Kansas City.
