Score: Wichita 4, Mallards 3

Key: An early 3-0 deficit was too much to overcome for the Quad-City Mallards (5-5-3), who fell in regulation for the first time this season with John Murray in goal.

Turning point: Mickey Lang broke away late in the second period for his eighth goal of the season to put the Mallards on the board, and Mike Stinziani followed with a goal midway through the third period to bring Quad-City to within 3-2 of the Thunder. But just 54 seconds later, RG Flath answered to give Wichita a 4-2 lead. Brett Robinson added a goal for the Mallards, but an interference call with 2:31 to play in the third period made a comeback even more difficult for the Mallards.

He said it: “At the start of this game we were missing something. We didn’t have that zip. ... We finally made it 3-2 and they come right back and score that goal. It was just demoralizing.” — Mallards coach Terry Ruskowski

Shortsighted: Mickey Lang’s goal was the fourth shorthanded marker of the season for the Mallards, which leads the league. It also equals the league-low number of power-play goals for Q-C this season. The Mallards were 0-for-3 on the power play Friday and fell to 4-for-48 on the season.
