The Quad-City Mallards signed forwards Kenny Brooks and Michael Pontarelli Thursday.

Brooks scored six goals and six assists for 12 points in 44 games last season as a rookie. The 6-foot, 1-inch, 195-pound Las Vegas native played 43 games with the Kelly Cup champion Colorado Eagles after playing one game with the Atlanta Gladiators last year.

Brooks played four years of college hockey at Penn State, scoring 14 goals and adding 32 assists in 117 games with the Nittany Lions.

"Kenny is an excellent addition to the Flock who makes us even deeper up front and who will play Mallard hockey," Mallards head coach Phil Axtell said. "He's a hard-working, humble guy who's hungry to start his second year as a pro after getting his first taste last season."

Pontarelli made his pro debut late last season, signing with the Norfolk Admirals after completing his college career at Union College. With the Admirals, Pontarelli scored two goals and tallied three assists in five games.

In four seasons at Union, Pontarelli scored 21 goals and added 30 assists in 121 games. He helped Union to the first national championship in school history as a freshman, when he scored 10 goals and added 13 assists in 39 games.

Pontarelli was also named player of the year in Canadian junior A hockey after leading the Cornwall Colts to the Central Canada Hockey League's Bogart Cup in 2013.

“Michael produced great numbers in junior hockey and then had success with an extremely deep college team before getting a tryout in Norfolk and making the most of his opportunity,” Axtell said. “I see him as someone with the potential to be a 200-foot player who can excel in the offensive zone.”

Brooks and Pontarelli are the fifth and sixth players signed this offseason by the Mallards, joining forwards Chris Francis, Josh MacDonald, Sam Warning and defenseman Chris Leibinger.
