- Former Illinois wrestling coach Mark Johnson

Former Rock Island Alleman wrestler and University of Illinois coach Mark Johnson will be given a lifetime achievement award by the Illinois chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Johnson and the others will be honored at an awards banquet Oct. 21 in Bloomington. Also being honored with lifetime achievement awards will be Dan Fulscher, Dave Klemm, Tom Porter and Marty Williams. Mark Mestemacher of Edwardsville will receive the Outstanding American award and Mike Powell of Oak Park-River Forest will receive the Medal of Courage.

Johnson placed second in the state at 167 pounds for Alleman in 1973 and was a two-time NCAA finalist at Michigan. He won three USA national championships and earned a berth on the 1980 U.S. Olympic team in Greco Roman wrestling. After serving as an assistant coach at Iowa, he spent 19 years as head coach at Oregon State and Illinois, compiling a record of 223-48-5.
