Susan Goldman Rubin grew up in the New York City borough of the Bronx and dreamed of becoming an artist.

Her focus later turned to writing and she has written more than 45 books for young people, many of them about art and on Judaic themes.

Her most recent title, “Music Was IT: Young Leonard Bernstein,” was honored as a finalist for the 2012 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults, 2012 Winner of the Sydney Taylor Book Award for Older Readers and a 2012 ALA Notable for Older Readers.

Rubin lives in Malibu, Calif., and was an instructor in the University of California-Los Angeles Extension Writers’ program for 20 years.
