A new Pet Supplies Plus store wants to leave its mark on its Davenport neighborhood.

Located in the Village Shopping Center, 902 W. Kimberly Road, the store is the fourth Iowa-based Pet Supplies Plus for business partners Suzy Schares and Jeff Stickfort. Their company, Eight Mile Pets, also owns franchises in Des Moines, Altoona and their Cedar Falls hometown.

"We carry any brand the big boxes do, just in a smaller footprint," Schares said. "We call our customers 'neighbors,' because we want to be their neighborhood pet store."

The store, which had its soft opening Friday, not only welcomes dogs with their owners, but also offers a self-serve pet wash station — with dryers to blow them fluffy dry.

While it mostly is used for dogs, she said "We've even had a pig, a chicken and a handful of cats."

The store carries a wide range of natural and grocery pet foods, pet products, toys, cat litter, fish tanks and more. It also sells "small critters," including hamsters, guinea pigs, reptiles, fish and small birds, she said.

The store offers a rescue adoption program, working with Scott County Humane Society to adopt out cats. Schares said each cat can stay at the store for two weeks, but some "have been (adopted) in little as 30 minutes."

"We like to give back to the community as much as we get," she said, adding the store wants to partner with rescue groups, community organizations, youth teams and schools on fundraisers and activities.

For the April 7 and 8 grand opening, three Quad-City animal rescue operations will be on hand to promote their programs: the humane society, Canine Kindness Rescue and King's Harvest.

The store's hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The store can be reached at 563-949-4997.

It is among more than 400 Pet Supplies Plus franchised and corporate stores in 33 states, including a corporate store in Burlington, Iowa. The company traces its roots to 1988 when the first store opened in Redford, Michigan. The company's exclusive pet food brand is Redford.

Schares, who runs their stores' day-to-day operations, said she quit her 15-year government job as a city clerk to pursue the venture with her friend, Stickfort.

"He's a developer and he was developing a strip mall when a Pet Supplies Plus was interested... We looked at the business model and loved it," she said. Of her career change, she said  "Who wouldn't want to come to work and pet puppies all day."
