A networking event next week in the Quad-Cities will allow women employed in the manufacturing industry to meet with their peers and hear from the women leaders in their industry.
The Manufacturing Institute, in partnership with Alcoa Foundation, will host the first-ever STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Forward networking series. It will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hotel Blackhawk, Davenport.
The event is part of the Institute's STEP Ahead Initiative, which was launched in 2012 to honor and promote the role of women in manufacturing through recognition, research and leadership. Research conducted then found while women make up half of the labor force, they only represent 24 percent of the manufacturing labor force.
As part of the STEP Ahead initiative, the Manufacturing Institute also now hosts a Women in Manufacturing STEP Ahead Awards. At the event in March in Washington, D.C., 130 women honorees and Emerging Leaders were recognized.
The speakers at Tuesday's event will include Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds; 2015 STEP honoree Terri DeRoin, production manager at Phoenix Closures Inc., Davenport; 2013 STEP honoree Rebecca Guinn, global director at Deere & Co.; and Cindy Barnett, area manager at Alcoa Davenport Works.
The Manufacturing Institute is the non-profit affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers.
