Davenport-based Von Maur Department Stores is continuing its national expansion with plans to open its third store in Georgia.
Von Maur announced Thursday that it will open a 165,000-square-foot store at the Mall of Georgia in Buford. The former two-story Nordstrom department store location will undergo a complete renovation beginning this summer and is expected to open in the fall of 2016. It will employ 200 associates, most of whom will be full-time.
The expansion is part of a targeted national growth strategy by the family-owned business. Founded more than 140 years ago in downtown Davenport, the department store chain first expanded beyond the Midwest in 2011 with an Atlanta, Ga., location. A year later, it opened its second store in the Atlanta market.
Von Maur since has moved into New York, Alabama and Oklahoma, where it opened a store in October.
"The Mall of Georgia represents the ideal addition to our group of stores in the Greater Atlanta area," Jim von Maur, company president, said in a news release. "As a premiere shopping destination and the largest mall in the Southeast, we are confident it will be an excellent match for us."
Von Maur will be an anchor tenant at the mall, which has more than 200 stores, theaters and a music amphitheater.
"We are thrilled to have Von Maur join the Mall of Georgia," David Contis, president of Simon Malls, said in the release. "Von Maur is a well-known fashion department store selling great brands that is known for its customer service. They are a perfect fit for our customer."
He added that this will be the fifth Von Maur department store in Simon's portfolio.
Von Maur operates 30 stores in 14 states, including two in the Quad-Cities at NorthPark Mall, Davenport, and SouthPark Mall, Moline. Once co-owned in a joint venture between Macerich and Simon DeBartolo Group and managed by Simon, the local malls now are owned and managed by Macerich.
