After three years of serving Caribbean fare in Davenport’s Hilltop Campus Village, owner Jason Stewart said Zeke’s Island Cafe has finally been “scratching the horizon.”
“That’s a surfing term: ‘Scratching the horizon.’ It means trying to get to that next level, and I think we’ve made it now,” Stewart said Thursday, during a celebration of his restaurant’s new expansion. “We’re at that next level. We have a lot more room now. And we’ll hopefully end up with a lot more traffic up here, and a lot more traffic for other (retailers) and restaurants (in the Hilltop).”
Stewart, who is known as “Chef Stu” by customers, cut a ribbon Thursday for a roughly 2,500 square-foot expansion of the restaurant, at 1509 N. Harrison St., Davenport. The space will seat more than 65 people, more than doubling the size and seating of Zeke’s Island Café, he said.
The addition also includes a new parking lot and patio for outdoor events, Stewart said. This week, the restaurant is unveiling a new dinner menu, plus Sunday brunch.
"Sunday is a slower time in the Hilltop so we thought maybe it'd help get traffic for shops up here if we offer brunch," Stewart said.
Zeke’s, which serves favorites such as Big Island Nachos and Caribbean Tacos, opened in 2014. The restaurant was forced to relocate from Spring Village Shopping Center on Kimberly Road, when the shopping mall was sold the following year.
"We got invited up here (to the Hilltop) three years ago," he said. "I walked into this place and I couldn't believe how nice it was. I knew Hilltop had been doing a lot of work, but the inside of this place was literally turn-key."
On Nov. 14, Zeke's will celebrate its third anniversary in the Hilltop Campus Village, he said.
"I went to the other (Zeke's location) and fell in love with the food and Stu, and I was delighted it came here," Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch said at Thursday's celebration. "The Hilltop is an important part of our Main Street community ... and this is a Quad-City destination."
