Sport: Girls Cross Country
School: Bettendorf High School
Coach's reason for the nomination: "Madison Temple recently placed fourth at the MAC conference meet and qualified for her second individual state cross country meet," said coach Erin Flynn. "As a junior, she has stepped into a leadership role on our team and leads quietly with work ethic and a fierce competitive spirit. Madison's commitment to running in the summer, even though she is busy with BHS softball, has allowed her to be racing her best at the end of the season."
How the athlete trains: "We start by building up our base mileage and working up the stamina that’s necessary for later season workouts. After school practices are a mix of quality and recovery workouts, and then lifting. Coach Flynn has a pretty intense schedule for us during the week, and we are held accountable for running on our own on the weekends."
Athlete's advice for others who want to play this sport: "Cross country may sound intimidating and running may not seem like any fun at all, but if you’re thinking about trying it, give it a shot. The atmosphere on an XC team is totally different than any other team I’ve ever been on, and we have a lot of fun. It’s definitely demanding, but running with the same people everyday really builds relationships that you won’t find anywhere else."
Athlete’s plan after high school: "After high school, I plan on going to college to play softball and study medicine."
