The LeClaire Community Library will be spending the week of October 20-28 celebrating its Friends of the Library group as part of the 2018 National Friends of Libraries Week. Our Friends group takes us from good to great by providing funds for our programming, furniture and a smart TV for our improved Young Adult space, patron passes to local museums, and special events throughout the year, like our Elf Academy this December.

Friends Week Celebration activities will include special children’s programming on the theme of Halloween, such as pumpkin decorating October 22 after school, and a visit from a mad scientist with a fun interactive science program the evening of October 24.

Local author Bill Mueller will speak October 25 about his book “Time to Ship Another Steer” about what it was like to grow up in a farm family as one of eleven children in the 1950s. Chad Lewis will share the eerie details of his search for elusive creatures such as vampires, werewolves and chupacabras on Saturday afternoon, Oct 20.

Friends Week celebration will end with the semi-annual Friends Book Sale Friday, Oct. 26, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more details on the Friends Week programs, go to our website or “friend” us on Facebook.

“The library has really helped this community to grow,” said Karen Nelson, Secretary of the Friends. “You can choose to use the library and know that it is going to benefit your family in a positive way.”

Other officers of the organization are Steve Morency, president; Pat D’Alessandro, vice-president; and Marilyn Irwin, treasurer.

Years ago D.R. Peterson created our library mascot, Stretch the Giraffe. The Friends are inviting our library patrons to share their own “Stretch Stories” in words and/or pictures about how the library has helped you and your family to stretch and grow, and achieve your potential. Forms are available at the front desk of the library.

The Friends of the LeClaire Library would also like to stretch and grow their membership. Anyone joining during Friends Week will receive a tote bag as a special gift.
