The team behind Baked Beer and Bread Company have something new brewing in the East Village of Davenport.

Baked on Tap, located just north of the bakery/brewery/bar, opened at 4:20 p.m. Friday.

The 1,000-square foot taproom is the latest offering from Baked co-owners Bill Sheeder and Stephanie Sellers.

In November 2016, the establishment at 1113 Mound St. started rolling out baked goods and the bar area, including a stage for music, opened in January. Then, the carb-loaded restaurant, featuring items such as a burger sandwiched between two doughnuts, and small-scale brewery were unveiled in April.

Its grand opening celebrations continue Saturday and Sunday, coinciding with the GAS Feed & Seed Festival happening at Baked Beer and Bread Company and the Village Theatre, 2113 11th St.

The space, which is outfitted with sleek chalkboard designs, fits 50 people and will have six beers on tap, starting with guest taps and three of Baked’s own brews:

  • The Get Down (a porter)
  • Stephanitely Blonde (a hoppy blonde)
  • Muffin Top (a blueberry coffee blonde)

“We want it to be quaint, cozy, community-focused,” Sellers said. “Just a warm and welcoming place to drink good beer.”

En route to opening day, there have been a few bumps in the road.

Shortly after opening the restaurant, Sheeder and Sellers got word that the neighboring property, a long vacant bright blue cottage, was for lease. Cobalt Coffee House was set to open there, but those plans fell through.

The couple jumped on it. Originally, they expected Baked on Tap to open in September.

"My vision was to have a big wrap-around patio," Sheeder said. "I want people to hang out on this side of the Village and I thought that would be the perfect addition.”

After he had already started pouring concrete, Sheeder learned the intended patio space — the area from the sidewalk to the front of the building — is Davenport city property.

The co-owner attended several City Council meetings and worked to get a license allowing the outdoor patio area. It was approved Sept. 13.

Baked on Tap then held its soft opening on Oct. 13, but had to close a day later because of plumbing issues. Turns out, the sewer was in need of replacing.

“It was kind of shocking,” Sheeder said. “It felt like a kick in the stomach.”

Last week, the pair launched a Kickstarter campaign online to help cover the expenses of the new sewer because, as Sheeder said, “We didn’t have the money to do it. ”

His fiancée said the campaign, which as of Friday had raised $350 out of the $15,000 goal, was “more about raising awareness.”

“We had gotten a lot of questions about the delay and we wanted people to know what was going on,” she said. “We don’t want people to think we don’t know what we’re doing.”

“Small business is meant to be difficult and we’re not afraid of hard,” Sellers added. “But it’s like, when does it end?”

Meanwhile, the couple is happy Baked on Tap is finally opening and will showcase Baked's craft beers, which Sheeder said are often overshadowed by the restaurant's menu and bakery items. 

"We know there's a cult following for our chocolate chip cookies," Sheeder said. "We also just want everyone to know there's brewery in the Village."
