Joe Buck reportedly will host 'Jeopardy!' this summer

“Who is Joe Buck?”

Well, the St. Louisan is the longtime lead NFL and MLB play-by-play announcer for Fox, calling the World Series annually and the Super Bowl in the seasons that network has that game. Now he reportedly is about to branch out as one of the fill-in hosts for the venerable nationally syndicated television game show “Jeopardy!”

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported that Buck will host an unknown number of episodes that will air this summer. The taping schedule would not be expected to interfere with his Fox duties, which are fairly light at this time of the year. There generally is a significant amount of time between “Jeopardy!” tapings and air dates.

Buck, who declined comment when reached Sunday by the Post-Dispatch, would join a list of high-profile celebrities from a variety of fields who have been conducting the show following the death late last year of Alex Trebek, who was the star of the answer-and-question program for 37 seasons.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was in the spot for the last two weeks and CNN newscaster Anderson Cooper is to take over Monday in a stint that runs for the rest of the month. Others who either have hosted the program or are scheduled to do so include Ken Jennings, who won a record 74 consecutive “Jeopardy!” matches, journalists Katie Couric, Bill Whitaker and Savannah Guthrie in addition to well-known doctors Mehmet Oz and Sanjay Gupta and the show’s executive producer, Mike Richards.

A “Jeopardy!” spokesperson could not be reached Sunday, but Marchand reported that Buck could be under consideration for the position on a permanent basis.

Buck, 51, would seem a natural for the job, given his ease on camera and the ability to not take himself too seriously when the situation warrants.

He has much experience in branching out from the sports broadcast booth, including serving as host of talk/interview programs (“Joe Buck Live” for a brief run on HBO in 2009, “Undeniable with Joe Buck” on DirecTV’s Audience Network from 2015-19), and appearances on TV shows including “Brockmire” and “Family Guy.” And he currently partners with actor Oliver Hudson on the free-wheeling “Daddy Issues” podcast (

Buck even served as the host of “Fox NFL Sunday,” the network’s NFL pregame show, in 2006 while also maintaining the leading play-by-play job.

In St. Louis, “Jeopardy!” airs at 4:30 p.m. weekdays on KSDK (Channel 5).
