Alleman coach Leslie Hird isn’t complaining after the first day at the IHSA Class A state tournament. The Pioneers earned six points Thursday and are among several teams tied for 10th.
More importantly, Alleman’s doubles team of Lauren Hird and Noely Bauman advanced to the round of 16 Thursday, winning two matches. The duo plays Friday to see if they can reach the quarterfinals. Two wins Friday would put them in the semifinals Saturday.
Alleman singles player Lily Schoeck was beaten in the first round but won her next two matches in the consolation bracket and will also play Friday.
“I am excited for everybody,” coach Hird said. “I think we’re in a good position.”
Geneseo’s doubles team of Madi Miller and Jane Thomas won its opener, then lost and will play in the consolation bracket Friday.
In Class 2A, Moline’s doubles team of freshmen Monika Birski and Lauren Myers won its opening match but lost the next two and were eliminated.
Quincy 2, Alleman 0: Four kills from Sydney Elliott and 10 assists from Lydia Dorsey weren't enough for the Pioneers as Quincy swept Alleman 25-14, 25-17 in their Western Big Six volleyball match.
