Friendship Manor Chaplain Larry Conway is now campus pastor at 1209 21st Ave., Rock Island.
"I’m happy to serve at Friendship Manor because it is a place that cares for people not only physically but emotionally and spiritually," he said.
Conway was ordained by the New Jersey Synod of the Lutheran Church in America, now the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and was one of the youngest people ever to become a pastor of that church.
He then served two congregational settings in the Maryland Synod and was part of the Synods ecumenical team responsible for Western Maryland.
He began his military ministry in 1985 at the request of the former Lutheran Church in America. He served in Germany, California and Kansas before moving to Arlington National Cemetery and serving as a full time funeral chaplain, leading about 600 services.
In 2001, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and moved to Hawaii where he was Deputy Installation Chaplain for the Army, directing 33 worship services in eight chapels on two islands and a staff of 22 people in three locations.
In January 2005, Conway became Command Chaplain for the Army Sustainment Command at the Rock Island Arsenal. Three months later he was deployed to Southwest Asia and served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar and Kuwait. He also was lead pastor for the Lutheran service in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. He returned to his Rock Island Arsenal position in September 2005 and retired from active duty in January 2007.
He accepted the call to serve as the senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moline, a post he retired from in October 2018.
At Friendship Manor, his responsibilities include visiting with residents, conducting vespers services in the chapel and services for Silver Cross and New Friendships Memory Care.
