Save money on Halloween by taking advantage of sales in October, or by purchasing items on clearance the year before.

Fall means that the holiday shopping season is almost upon us, so many people are starting to think about the money they’ll be spending during this time of year. If you haven’t started thinking about it yet, the stores want you to start. Just walk into a store and check out the seasonal area. Stores have Christmas items right there, along with the Halloween items already. I’m not ready for all that yet, but I am ready to look for the hot deals of October. These are a few of the items that might save you some money this month.

1. A New Car

Now, of course, we can’t always wait for the best deal when we are in need of a new car. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, as car companies have also started to roll out new models other times of the year, but if you’re in the market for a new car and have the time to shop around, the fall is one of the best times to look for a good deal. Car dealers are looking to clear their space of older models as the new models arrive. Plus some dealers have Columbus Day sales events to save more. Research the cars you are interested in and see when the new models are set to arrive, so you can buy at the right time.

2. Jeans

It’s in between back-to-school shopping season and holiday season, so stores are looking to move some product. Jeans see some big discounts this month. In fact, in just a quick browse of this week’s ads and store websites, it’s clear that jeans are highlighted in their sales. Even Kohl’s homepage says, “All About The Jeans” with links to jeans for the whole family, and there are discounts of more than 50 percent on some brands, plus you can often find additional coupon codes for Kohl’s to save even more. Other stores, like Hollister, have buy one, get one 50 percent off. You’ll definitely find some good deals on jeans if you shop around this month.

3. Halloween items

The cheapest time to buy Halloween items is actually after Halloween. But if your family is not like mine who starts planning our family themed costumes basically a year in advance (last year we did Star Wars; this year is X-Men, and we have a plan for next year), then you probably are looking for Halloween items in October, before Halloween. Don’t worry. You can still find great deals, even if your child changes their mind several times before trick-or-treat night.

Through today, Target has Halloween costumes buy one, get one 50 percent. There are also great deals on decor and candy. Match candy sales with coupons for awesome low prices, like the sales you’ll see starting tomorrow at CVS. Then keep your eyes peeled for Halloween clearance after Oct. 31 for things to save for next year or even cheap candy that you could use for the holidays.

4. Camping items

Camping season is coming to an end, so now is the time to look for any gear you’ll need next season, like tents, chairs and sleeping bags. My son joined the Boy Scouts this year and is headed for his first camping trip this month, so I will definitely be keeping an eye out for deals. Amazon has had some good deals recently on camping supplies, but also keep an eye out in some of the specialty stores.

5. Pizza

October is National Pizza Month, so if your family likes to pick up the occasional pizza on a busy weeknight or for watching Sunday football games with friends, you’ll likely find some great deals throughout the month. I’ve already received promo emails from Pizza Hut, and I saw that Happy Joe’s has a 25 percent off an online order promo code. Be sure to check what your favorite pizza joint has for promos this month.

Keep your eye out for these good deals in October before we prepare for one of my favorite shopping times of the year: Black Friday. It’s coming faster than it seems.
