Man dies in morning stabbing at NorthPark; ex-wife charged

UPDATED:  A 53-year-old woman, who apparently stalked her ex-husband across the country, was charged with his murder today after she allegedly stabbed him repeatedly as he walked inside NorthPark Mall, in Davenport, police said.

Mauricio Droguett, 52, was walking inside the mall when he was attacked by Debi Joy Droguett Olson,  Capt. David Struckman said. A co-worker, walking with Droguett, grabbed Olson and held her until police arrived. Officers already in the vicinity of the mall arrived on the scene within two minutes of the 7:24 a.m. attack, Struckman said.

Olson was booked into the Scott County jail and charged with first degree murder and willful injury after being questioned by police, said Jerry Feuerbach, an assistant Scott County attorney.

“This is a very upsetting crime, but one of those types of crimes that can’t be predicted” said Struckman, emphasizing that it had nothing to do with business at the mall. “It was one person targeting another.”

According to Struckman, both Droguett and Olson, who are thought to be from Sarasota, Fla., had a long history of trouble between them. Droguett had taken out restraining orders in three other unidentified states to stop Olson from having contact with him. The nature of the incidents that resulted in the orders was not known.

Droguett, who works for the Carson & Barnes Family Circus, which has a winter headquarters in Sarasota, was walking with a co-worker in the mall when Olson allegedly showed up and attacked him with a knife. Droguett was stabbed multiple times in the front and back of his upper and lower torso and died at the scene, Struckman said.
