Q. Are there plans to reopen the Long John Silver's/A&W restaurant on Brady Street in Davenport? — Bill, Davenport
A. We contacted Nellis Management Co., Urbandale, Iowa. They are listed as the registered agent or reserving party for the business on the Iowa Secretary of State's website. Audrey Veatch, executive assistant for Nellis Management Co., said, "Unfortunately, the restaurant sustained considerable internal fire damage. We are planning to rebuild and hope to be open toward the end of this year."
The Long John Silver's/A&W restaurant was damaged in an early-morning fire on Sunday, April 9, 2017, according to an article by Linda Cook published in the Times on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. The fire began at 3:58 a.m. Sunday, April 9, according to Davenport District Fire Chief Joe Smith, the article said. Fire crews arrived to find smoke showing on the exterior, Smith said.
"Firefighters forced entry into the locked business where no employees were present at the time," Smith said.
"The damage estimate was $100,000 to the property and $50,000 to the contents," Smith said.
A follow-up article by Linda Cook published on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, in the Quad-City Times said the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, according to Davenport Fire Marshal Mike Hayman. The blaze started on the east side interior of the drive through-window area inside the drive-up cubicle that's on the south side of the building, Hayman said. It was not a grease fire or arson, he said.
Q. Who do you need to contact regarding the number of chairs at Scott County Pool? Over the past several years, the pool has done a major renovations and had added lounge chairs. Kudos for this, but they have been dwindling over the years. Why do they not add more? — Lisa
A. We contacted the Scott County Conservation Board regarding your question. Roger A. Kean, director, responded:
"The Conservation Board is responsible for the Scott County Park Pool, so your e-mail was forwarded to me.
"Thank you very much to your reader for their inquiry, and we appreciate hearing how much our customers enjoy the lounge chairs we provide. They have proven so popular that it's virtually impossible to have enough for everyone, and have to replace several every year due to wear. We do realize that we have to purchase some replacements, but were actually just reviewing our needs with our park and pool manager. Our current supplier also stopped carrying them this year, so we were exploring whether to continue purchasing the less expensive models that need to be replaced regularly, or if we should purchase a more durable model.
"I've forwarded your email on to our staff, and have asked them to finalize that decision and to purchase additional chairs as soon as possible.
"Thank you again for your reminder, and hope you continue to enjoy the pool."
