Augustana College’s Carlsson Evald Hall was the target of vandals who left racial slurs, symbols and one message suggesting an act of violence against the college, spokeswoman Ashleigh Johnston said Saturday night.

A campus security officer discovered the vandalism late Thursday or early Friday during a routine check of the building, Johnston added. The building was unlocked.

Rock Island Police were contacted at 12:49 a.m. Friday to investigate, according to an incident report from police department.

The vandalism occurred some time on Thursday, but the time of the incident is not known.

Kai Swanson, assistant to the college’s president, said the students are on break between the winter and spring trimesters.

According to the college’s website, Evald Hall is home to the departments of accounting, business, economics, education, sociology and anthropology, and psychology.

Johnston said there was extensive vandalism in the form of the racial slurs and symbols and threat, and that all of the graffiti has been removed.

The college security office is responding by increasing patrols around campus. Additionally, all buildings will be locked at 4:30 p.m. while the campus is on break.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Rock Island Police Department at 309-732-2677 or Augustana’s Public Safety-Police at 309-794-7711.
