Guardian Industries is reporting that just before 7 p.m. Saturday there was an explosion at the Guardian Glass Plant in DeWitt, located at 300 S. 5th Ave. E.

The explosion was of an unknown origin, according to the information released by Guardian Industries.

“The plant was evacuated and appropriate emergency personnel responded,” according to the statement from the company. “As we work to manage this incident, our employees’ health and safety remains our primary concern. There is no risk to the public at this time.

There were numerous ambulances, and mutual aid came from as far away as the Rock Island Arsenal at the scene in DeWitt on Saturday.

Eric Van Lancker, Clinton County auditor and the county public information officer, said that there were injuries. The extent of the injuries and the number of people taken to the hospital was not available late Saturday.

However, Van Lancker confirmed that there were no deaths were reported. “I can confirm that,” he said.

Guardian is expected to issue another statement sometime Sunday morning, Van Lancker said.
