Gehrmann earns Gold Award

MaryTherese Gehrmann of Bettendorf has achieved the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, by painting a mural in the Davenport CASI Senior Center.

"A Mural to Remember" is designed to refresh memories for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The artwork is based on Iowa scenery and includes bright flowers and trees to stimulate brain activity.

“My favorite moments about painting was when patients would stop and suddenly tell me stories,” she said. “Patients who struggled to remember simple life facts would stop to tell me stories of their childhood that they remembered because of the mural.”

MaryTherese has created a brochure about her project and the method of visual stimulation to assist decision makers at nursing homes.

The daughter of Carol and Phillip Gehrmann, she attends Bettendorf High School.
