A Walcott woman is facing child endangerment charges alleging she shook a 6-month-old child hard enough to cause brain bleeding, Walcott Police said.
Rachel Elizabeth Steahr, 18, of 441 W. James St., Apt. 3 is charged with two counts of child endangerment resulting in serious injury.
Each of the charges is a Class C felony under Iowa law that carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
According to the arrest affidavit filed by Walcott police, Steahr is alleged to have placed a 6-month-old child in a bouncer seat and shook “the seat with enough force to cause intracranial bleeding, stroke, blindness and brain damage.”
Hospital CT scans revealed the victim had evidence of head traumas from several occasions “consistent with multiple abusive shakings over a prolonged period of time,” according to the arrest affidavit.
Steahr was arrested Monday and booked into the Scott County Jail at 9:35 p.m. She was being held Tuesday night on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
A preliminary hearing on the case is scheduled for Dec. 14 in Scott County District Court.
