Just two years ago, outside of the locker room under Arthur Ashe Stadium, Madison Keys and her mother, Christine, hugged following a fourth-round defeat to Serena Williams at the U.S. Open tennis tournament.E

Late Thursday night at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, mother and daughter embraced again in about the same location.

But rather than tears of disappointment and sadness, these were tears of achievement and joy.

Sean Freese, accused of fatally shooting his parents last year, makes a court appearance Thursday, Aug. 24, in the Scott County Courthouse in Davenport.

What started as a routine hearing at the Rock Island County Justice Center erupted into chaos. 

“I don’t have a mental problem,” John P. Conwell told Rock Island County Judge Frank Fuhr moments after being declared unfit to stand trial in the deaths of his grandmother and uncle in Rock Island.

“Actually, I have something important to read that you need to hear,” the 39-year-old continued.
