Genesis Health System CEO Doug Cropper speaks at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday at Genesis Medical Center Aledo.

ALEDO, Ill. — Genesis Medical Center Aledo showed off a $12 million renovation project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community open house on Tuesday.

The upgrade took two years to complete.

"The whole facility has been touched in some way," Genesis Medical Center Aledo administrator Ted Rogalski said. "We did a complete gut and remodel of all our outpatient services."

Ground was broken on the project in June 2013, just a few months after Genesis assumed ownership of the former Mercer County Hospital. There hadn't been a significant improvement to the facility since it was originally constructed in the 1980s.

"We're talking about renovation to the emergency department, surgical area, physical therapy, laboratory and radiology," Rogalski said. "Obviously, also improvements were made in building infrastructure, HVAC, sprinkler system, electrical and all of that sort of thing."

Genesis started managing the former Mercer County Hospital in 2009 before taking over ownership in February 2013. Genesis also owns the former Mercer County Nursing Home, which is adjacent to the hospital campus.
