The man accused of killing Angela Marie Hennes in 2007 has been transported from a federal prison in Missouri to the Scott County Jail to await trial.

Scott County authorities announced June 8 they had charged Chad Michael Lee Welsh, 33, with first-degree murder. Welsh was in a federal prison medical center in Springfield, Mo., serving an eight-year sentence on child pornography charges.

Welsh is from Burlington, Iowa.

Hennes’ burned remains were found Jan. 13, 2007, along the side of a road in the 15000 block of 100th Avenue in rural Scott County. The mother of two sons had been missing for 10 days.

Authorities collected DNA samples from the scene in 2007, and that information was used to match with Welsh’s DNA four years later, Scott County Attorney Mike Walton said.

She was strangled to death, an autopsy showed.

Welsh was booked into the Scott County Jail on Thursday. Bond has been set at $1 million.

His initial court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. He also is charged with abuse of a corpse.

First-degree murder in Iowa is punishable by life in prison upon conviction.
