MUSCATINE, Iowa — Muscatine Police briefly detained fish they had caught as they spent some time fishing with special needs individuals from Optimae Life Services at the Discovery Park Friday.
Dale Bender was one of the Optimae clients who was fishing with the Muscatine Police. He said he enjoyed catching bluegill with some of the real bait they used.
According to Muscatine patrol officer Ken Voorhess, the idea got started with fellow patrol officer Donyell Raisbeck.
“We were doing some community patrolling,” Raisbeck said. “We met Chris (one of the Optimae clients) through work and decided to call their day program.”

Optimae agreed and the group spent part of Friday morning fishing with some of the fishing poles from Discovery Park.
Voorhees said there was more to the trip than just a morning of fishing.
“We try to do it pretty frequently to show that we’re not just here during the bad times,” Voorhees said.
