DeWITT, Iowa — Ambrose Leo Ruchotzke, 94, of DeWitt, Iowa, formerly of Camanche, Iowa, passed away March 10, 2018, at Westwing Place, DeWitt.
Ambrose was born March 15, 1923, in rural Green Island, Iowa, to Gustave and Mary (McMahon) Ruchotzke. He graduated from Preston High School in 1940 and from the American Institute of Commerce in 1956. Ambrose was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Petrof Bay in the Pacific Theater from 1943 until 1946. He was an auditor for the United States Milk Market Department and later retired from insurance sales.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt and was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Ambrose also held memberships in the American Legion for 72 continuous years, V.F.W., Amvets, Escort Carrier Sailors & Airmen Association, United States Navy Memorial Foundation and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Bernetta; a son, James Ruchotzke of Sacramento, California; a daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Dan Bernabei of Parker, Colorado; granddaughters, Marcella, Ambrosia and Victoria Bernabei; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Ambrose in death were his parents and sisters, Shirley Turner and Mary Jane Bronson.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Fr. John Stack officiating. Burial and military rites by the DeWitt American Legion will be held at St. Irenaeus Catholic Cemetery, Clinton.
