DAVENPORT - A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Herbert L. Studer, 84, of Davenport will be 1 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1923 N. Fillmore St., Davenport. Honoring his wishes, cremation rites were accorded. The family will greet friends from noon until the time of the service at the church. Inurnment will take place at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.
Herb passed away October 6, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Herb was born June 1, 1933, in Bradley, Illinois, son of Herbert V. and Cecile A. (Guenette) Studer. Herb attended St. Procopius College as a divinity student through 1953, until he enlisted in the Marines, working as a postal clerk at the USMC Air Base, El Toro.
Herb married Mary Jane “Janie” Weling, of Kankakee. After receiving his BA in Business & Education, Herb taught for the St. George and Kankakee School Districts. Herb received his MBA from Northern Illinois University. While working at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, Herb and Janie raised their family in Bradley, Illinois. When the plant closed, Herb transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal, and moved his family to Davenport. Herb remained at the Rock Island Arsenal, working as a contract specialist until his retirement in 1988 after 33 years of service. In retirement, Herb returned to teaching and taught remedial Math and English classes at Scott Community College.
Herb spent a lot of time fishing in the Kankakee River with his fishing buddies. He and his family went fishing at a special pond in Clifton where the kids learned to enjoy fishing. Being an USMC expert rifleman, Herb enjoyed spending time hunting squirrels in the local woods. In retirement, Herb also enjoyed making bird houses for wrens and chickadees.
Those left to honor Herb’s memory include his children, Denise (George) DeAnda, Blaise (Lois) Studer, Sabrina (Les) Goodson, Veronica (Jeff) Ricketts and Marc (Lisa Stanton) Studer all of Davenport, and Michelle (Bernie) Kembitzky of West Dundee, Illinois; 15 grandchildren, Darcy and Allan DeAnda, Alex and Katy Kembitzky, Amanda, Jessie and Carrie Studer, Jenny (Bryan) Ghrist, Lucus (Frankie) Goodson, Sandra (Izzy) Sutton, Dan (Jackie), April, Bradley and Lucas Ricketts, Christopher Studer; 11 great-grandchildren, Lillie, Madeline, Caroline, Jonathan, Isabelle, Lucy, Jackson, Kane, Trevor, Makenzie, Eli, Aubrey and Tyler; brother, Conrad Studer, Lake Havasu, Arizona; and a sister, Rayne (George) Ray of Bradley, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Janie; and a brother, Victorian Studer. May they rest in peace.
