ROCK ISLAND — Lawrance J. “Larry” Ihrer, 64, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015, at St. Anthony’s Nursing and Rehab, Rock Island, after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 1st St. A, Moline, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be at a later date in the family gravesite in Burlington. Memorials can be made to the art departments of Moline High School, Wilson Middle School or Black Hawk Special Education, Moline.

Larry was born May 13, 1951, in Burlington, the son of Robert J. and Barbara (Marshall) Ihrer.

In his early years, Larry attended Burlington schools, and as a young artist, he painted the exterior of Burlington High School, and the painting hung for many years in the principal’s office.

Larry graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where he majored in art history. He illustrated covers for the Izaak Walton League and later displayed his art works locally at the John Deere Commons and in the Quad-City area. He also was featured on PBS as he painted.

For the past 25 years, Larry taught in the Quad-City schools, and because of health problems, he later sub-taught all subjects, and his main assignments were at Moline High School, Wilson Middle School and Black Hawk Special Education. Students called him “Mr. I, the guy with the tie,” and whenever Larry was in public, there was always a “Hi, Mr. I."

Larry went the extra mile for others, known to him or not, and was devoted to animals.

Survivors include his mother, Barbara (Edd) Ihrer West; brother, Jeffrey (Debbie) Ihrer; son, Dan (Christina) Ihrer, and family; nieces, Heather, Kim and their families; and his friend, Maureen Stanley, with whom he shared his life, and her five children, and throughout the years, “inherited” 14 grandchildren who loved him dearly and enjoyed time camping, trips to Lake Michigan and family get-togethers.

“Goodbye, Mr. I, the guy with the tie,” paint up the sky.
