Martin Cline Grider was born March 31, 1918, in Appleton City, Missouri, the son of Martin D. Grider and Della (Cline) Grider. Martin returned often to Appleton City, including in 2016 for his Class of ’36 80th high school reunion.
Following his graduation from the University of Missouri-Columbia in mechanical engineering, he accepted a position with Curtis Wright Aeronautical in Montclair, New Jersey, designing airplane engines. He was united in marriage to Colleen Beatrice Bever on Sept. 1, 1942. She passed away in 2002. They enjoyed almost 60 wonderful years of marriage.
While raising a family in Montclair, Martin was involved in the Chorale Society. He also was scoutmaster to his four sons for many years, even camping in the middle of winter.
In Glenview, Illinois, he sold church organs and owned and operated Nature’s Cupboard Health Foods. They then moved to Washington state and later to Bettendorf in 2001.
He loved his family and classical music. He also loved cards (he was a euchre shark!!), cars, engines, all things mechanical and science fiction (especially Heinlein).
Memorials may be made to the Quad-City Symphony.
Those left to honor his memory include daughters, Christine Bachelder, of Bettendorf, and Mary and David Golnick, of Mukilteo, Washington; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Lyn Egolf Grider, of Minneapolis, Michael Grider and Maureen Hickey, of Chicago, and Stephen and Robin Grider, of Argyle, Texas; grandchildren, Martin (Florence Taitel), John, Dan Grider, Christy (Justin) Rogers, Craig (Cecilia Chin) and Matthew (Brittany) Bachelder, Patrick Grider and Rebecca (Jennifer Yo) Grider, Bonnie (Jeff) Landy and Katie Grider; darling great-grandchildren, Weather Grider and Colleen Grider; his sister, Mary Grider Harrison, of Livermore, California; nephews, Scott (Chyoko) Harrison, of Pleasanton, California, and Robert (Betty) Harrison, of Boise, Idaho; and two great-nephews and a great-niece.
