JOHNSTON, Iowa — Sister Mary Anne Leto (Mary Jacinta), CHM, 87, died July 1, 2015, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Johnston. Services are at Bishop Drumm, Our Lady of Peace Chapel. Vigil will be 4 p.m. Monday, July 6, and funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 7. Burial services and interment will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Ottumwa, Iowa.
Mary Anne Leto was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Des Moines, to Ignazio and Josephine Collo Leto. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary Sept. 8, 1946, and professed vows July 19, 1949. Her degrees are B.A., Marycrest College, Davenport, and MSE, Drake University, Des Moines.
She taught in Catholic elementary schools: Sacred Heart, St. Pius X, St. Anthony and All Saints in Des Moines; St. Mary, St. Joseph, St. Alphonsus in Davenport; Our Lady of Lourdes, Bettendorf, and St. Agnes, Red Lodge, St. Joseph, Great Falls and St. Leo, Lewistown, all in Montana. She worked as a nurse's aide and in pastoral care at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, and for more than a decade, she was director of activities. From 2000-2009, she served as coordinator of retired sisters’ services. She, herself, retired to Bishop Drumm in 2012, where she resided until her death.
Family connections and contacts with the Italian community in Des Moines were very important to Sister Mary Anne. She cared for her mother in the family home for a time and was especially close to her brother, Father Nelo, celebrant of her Mass of Christian Burial. Sister Mary Anne was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Joseph; and sisters, Frances Muller and Rosalie Caponigro. She is survived by brothers, John, Sam and Father Nelo Leto; numerous nieces and nephews; and the sisters and associates of her CHM community.
