ROCK ISLAND-Craig L. Kavensky, 61, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Services are 11 am Tuesday, February 12 at Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri City Jewish Center followed by a meal of condolence. Interment will be in the Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island. A traditional Shiva visitation will be held from 6-9 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at his home.
Craig was born on September 12, 1957 to Louise (Rosengard) and Harrison Kavensky. After graduating from Rock Island High School, he received a Bachelor of Science in Finance (with high honors) from University of Illinois, and his Juris Doctor (with high honors) from Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1982 and joined his father as an attorney at one of the Quad Cities' oldest law firms, now known as Winstein, Kavensky and Cunningham LLC.
As a lawyer, Craig concentrated on worker's compensation and personal injury cases and served as managing partner of the full-service law firm for most of the past 15 years. During his 37 years in practice, he was passionate about representing the interests of men and women who were injured on the job. His clients were consistently awarded and recovered significant sums; several cases in excess of $1 million. Throughout his career, Craig's main goal was helping his clients and their families receive the benefits and compensation to which they are entitled. He was highly-regarded by the legal community for his dedication to all parties involved in the cases he handled.
He was a member of the American Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, the Illinois Worker's Compensation Lawyers Association, and the Rock Island County Bar Association. He was selected and was a member of the Leading Lawyers Network in the state of Illinois. Craig was a lifetime member of the United Auto Workers union.
Craig has served as a board member for the Blackhawk College Foundation, Tri City Jewish Center, and the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities. As a life-long resident of Rock Island, Craig was passionate about making this community a better place to live as exemplified by his appointment to the City of Rock Island Preservation Commission and the Development Association of Rock Island. As a member of the Rock Island County Building Commission, he was instrumental in the design and construction of the Rock Island County Justice Center Annex.
As a fervent and accomplished golfer, Craig had the skill and good fortune of having two hole-in-ones at Crow Valley Golf Club where he served as past president on the board of directors. Craig helped shape the lives and golf games of many Quad City youth as a board member for the First Tee of the Quad Cities and as the assistant golf coach for the Rock Island Girls Varsity Golf Team.
A true family man, Craig was deeply committed to his faith and a loyal friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his fairness, honesty and genuine love of helping others. He was a consummate politician who never served in an official capacity but was able to bring both sides of the table to an agreeable outcome. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jodie (Shagrin) of Rock Island; a sister Wendy (Michael) McCollom of Orinda, CA and their daughter Tamar of Brooklyn, New York; and his two daughters, Mia Rose Kavensky of New York City and Dr. Elisse Kavensky of Miami, Florida.

DAVENPORT-Raymond C. "Ray" Shubat, 77, of Davenport, IA passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2019 after a short time at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. Prior to that, he was cared for by his loving family in the comfort of his own home. A funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2019 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the mortuary. He will be laid to rest in Davenport Memorial Park. Ray was born on March 28, 1941, a son of Joseph and Helena (Azzaline) Shubat in Centerville, IA. He was united in marriage to Susan K. Bruning on May 20, 1961 in Davenport, IA. He retired from Alcoa as a foil mill operator after 36 years of service.
In his younger years, Ray enjoyed working on cars, especially a 1969 Dodge Charger. He loved to go fishing and spending time at the cottage on Crystal Lake. He coached for the Dad's Club softball team and was a Cub Scouts den leader. Ray also worked with stained glass and etching pictures as a hobby.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sue; daughter, Julie (Jeff) Adair; grandchildren, Ryan (Natalie) Adair and Cory (Molly Zogg) Adair; son, Shawn Shubat and family; sister, Debbie (David) Shropshire; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank and Richard Shubat; sister, Sandy Detlafs; and granddaughter, Melissa Adair.

MOLINE-Robert B. Shipp, 66, of Moline, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019 at UnityPoint Health, Trinity-Rock Island. A memorial visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Wheelan Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Memorials may be made to METAvivor.
Bob was born August 7, 1952 in Amhurst, Ohio, son of Robert B. and Eleanor (Sharer) Shipp. He married Michele Rothweiler, his companion of 36+ years, on March 12, 2004. Though he held several jobs over the years, Bob's first love was cooking. He was a cook and sous chef at area restaurants and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Bob was a licensed Pyrotechnician for 20 years and delighted in making memories for spectators. He was a lifelong camper and never met an animal or child who wasn't "taken" by his gentle way. He was very proud to be the first and only male model on the runway for "Stylin' against Breast Cancer." He was happy and proud to share his breast cancer journey. Bob was a 35 year member of the FOE #956, where he served as President for 11 years. Most of all, he was proud of his children and grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Special thanks to Dr. Stewart Garneau, his entire staff, and 4th floor south, Trinity, RI, for their care and compassion.
Survivors include his wife, Michele; parents, Robert and Eleanor; children, Corbin (Melissa) Shipp and Lacey (Robert) Burris; grandchildren, Hunter Shipp and Devin, Seth, Sarah and Benjamin Burris; siblings, Barry (Faye) Shipp, Rhonda Penn, Roy (Kathy) Shipp and many nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

MUSCATINE-Hugo Schramm, 93, of Muscatine, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Lutheran Living. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, February 17, 2019 from 2:00 – 5:00 P.M. at the Eliza Community Center. Private family inurnment will take place at Eliza Creek Cemetery later this Spring. Hugo Max Schramm was born on February 28, 1925 in Denison, Iowa, the son of Hugo Paul and Minnie (Weinbrandt) Schramm. Following his high school departure, Hugo went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Marines during World War II. On June 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to Shirley Hollrah in Denison, Iowa. Hugo had worked as a carpenter in the area for many years before retiring as a finish carpenter from Knutson Construction in Muscatine. He was a member of the Eliza Community Church. Hugo enjoyed woodworking, working on his farm with the livestock, fishing, panning for gold and making jewelry out of gemstones.
Hugo will be deeply missed by his children, Gene (Cheryl Fletcher) Schramm of Muscatine, Dawn Reber of Rapid City, South Dakota, Denise (Edward) Ziegenhorn of Eliza, Illinois and Roxane (Kyle) Anders of Buffalo Prairie, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; one brother, Al (Irene) Schramm of Hay Springs Nebraska; and longtime companion, Darlene Martin of Muscatine.
Hugo was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two sisters, Ruby Carstensen and Lil Schramm.

TIPTON-Hazel Ann Winder Thompson, 84, of Tipton, formerly of Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Cherokee Village, Arkansas, died peacefully early Sunday morning, February 10, 2019, in Cedar Manor Nursing Home, Tipton. Her family will hold private services at a later date and then be entombed next to her husband in the United Methodist Columbarium in Cherokee Village, Arkansas. Hazel Ann, daughter of John D. and Florence Granger McChesney, was born on March 9, 1934 in Lemmon, South Dakota. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1952 and the College of Medical Technology where she became a Med-tech. On June 19, 1954 Ann was united in marriage to John D. Winder in Waterloo, Iowa (they later divorced). In October of 2004 Ann was united in marriage to Francis (Tom) V. Thompson in Cherokee Village, Arkansas. Ann was best known as a realtor where she worked in Cedar Rapids for over 20 years. After moving from Cedar Rapids to Cherokee Village she operated a restaurantar for several years. Ann was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo.
Ann is survived by her daughter, Jody and her husband, Darrell Yutesler, Jr. of Lowden, Iowa and her son, Mark and his wife, Dee Winder of Mount Vernon, Iowa; and her first husband, John Winder of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Grandchildren, Ryan and Matt Winder, Dalton Yutesler, Hannah and Colden Clark; and her sister, Shirley and her husband, Ray Maurer of Verona, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents.

DAVENPORT-Alvin F. Gehbauer, 100, a life-long resident of Davenport, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019 at his home.
Funeral services are 11:30 am Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial is at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 10:30 am until service time Thursday at the church. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Al was born May 24, 1918 in Davenport, a son of Adam and Minnie Helken Gehbauer. He married B. Elizabeth "Beth" Durlin on May 13, 1944 in Washington D.C. She died June 30, 2011.
He retired in 1980 from the J.I. Case Corp., Rock Island, where he had worked for 40 years. Having worked in various positions with the company, he was vice-senior manager when he retired.
Al was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Davenport Moose and Elks Clubs and the American Legion Post 26 Davenport. Al had also been a member of Family Campers On Wheels.
Survivors include sons, Bruce (Jill) Gehbauer, Milan, and Jeffery (Michele) Gehbauer, Richmond, Va.; daughter-in-law, Teresa Costello Gehbauer, Davenport; grandchildren, Victoria (Scott) Ricketts, Lauren Gehbauer, Aaron Gehbauer and Zachary Gehbauer; and great grandchildren, Archer and Sawyer Ricketts. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beth; son, Ted Gehbauer; three brothers; and a sister.

DAVENPORT-Patricia H. Lange, 82, of Davenport, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf surrounded by her family.
A time to greet friends and celebrate Pat's life will be held Wednesday, February 13 from 4 until 7p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. Keeping with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Patricia Hazel Westphalen was born on March 18, 1936 in Davenport, a daughter of Carl and Artelia Westphalen. She graduated from Davenport High School.
Pat worked for Dial Finance and retired from Ford Motor Credit in the early 1990's. She enjoyed volunteering as a "Pink Lady" at the former Mercy Hospital.
Pat had an incredibly generous and loving spirit who adored her grandchildren. She loved bargain hunting, going to auctions, antiquing, and her daily shopping trips with her sister, Edith. She also enjoyed growing flowers.
Survivors include her children and their spouses: Steven (Joni) Lange, Davenport, Jayne (Robert) Boston, Brooks, Kentucky; granddaughters: Ashley (Joseph) Patterson and Stacey (Jeff) Schebler, all of Iowa City, great-grandsons: Aiden, Elliott, Brody, Noah, and Cole; siblings: Edith Smith, Nellie Van Vooren, Nancy (Gene) Stanger, Carolann (Al) Coster, and Richard (Mary) Westphalen.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Velma Huetter.
