Sherrard teacher faces theft charge

SHERRARD, Ill. — The Sherrard School District today confirmed the arrest of another employee on a theft charge.

Thomas Watkins, 63, of Aledo was taken into custody Thursday by Mercer County sheriff’s deputies on a Rock Island County warrant. He was released after posting 10 percent of $10,000 bond.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation initiated in April 2009 and Watkins is no longer employed by the district, the district said in a news release.

Watkins was an English instructor at Sherrard High School.  He was suspended without pay May 5, 2009, then was fired by the school board on May 20, 2009.

A former secretary at high school pleaded guilty April 29 to stealing $91,000 from the school district's student activity fund. She faces up to five years in prison.

Kelly K. Monson, 47, of 1756 Knoxville Road, entered the plea to a felony count of theft in Rock Island County Circuit Court. The plea includes an agreed cap of five years in prison. She will be sentenced July 6 and remains out on bond.

The money was stolen from the student activity fund between Jan. 1, 2004, and April 17, 2009. Monson was a secretary at the high school and was employed by the district for 13 years before being fired in April 2009. Superintendent Rebecca Rodocker said that during a review, she and the business manager found deficits in accounts that should never have a deficit.
