IOWA CITY  — Iowa City has ordered a bar to tear down a platform where a student says she was told she was too overweight to dance.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen says the city’s housing and inspection services department has sent a formal violation to The Union Bar, demanding the platform be removed by Friday.

The platform, which is 4-feet square and 4-feet tall, overlooks the dance floor.

Code Enforcement Assistant Jann Ream says the platform, which doesn’t have a railing, was in violation because of safety concerns.

Last week. University of Iowa student Jordan Ramos accused the bar of discrimination, saying she was prohibited from dancing on the platform because of her size.

Ream says the platform was inspected after a written complaint on Monday.
